The rinse water should register a pH range between 6.5 and 7.Allow the surface to dry for a full 3 days before proceeding with the application. Note that surfaces not exposed to direct sunlight may require additional drying time.Caulk All Gaps and ChecksDue to natural processes and aging, wood often develops cracks and checks over time. After applying a wood preservative, fill any gaps between logs and upward-facing cracks/checks in the wood with a high-quality acrylic latex caulk/filler such as Sashco’s Log Jam Chinking or Conceal Textured Log Caulking.Weather ConsiderationsEnsure the air and surface temperature falls within the range of 50°F (10°C) to 90°F (32°C) during application. Avoid direct sunlight during the application process, and refrain from applying if there is a chance of rain, snow, heavy dew, or temperatures dropping below 40°F (4°C) within the next 48 hours.Application GuidelinesCetol Maintenance can be applied over Sikkens Log & Siding or Cetol 23 Plus finishes that exhibit a dull appearance but are otherwise in good condition, with no bubbling, peeling, or flaking.Apply Sikkens Cetol Maintenance RE wood finish within four weeks of surface cleaning, provided the surface remains free of dirt, grease, grime, and mildew.Ensure you have enough product for the entire job and mix all products thoroughly before beginning.Stir the product well before and periodically during application, and avoid thinning it.While brushing is the preferred method, if using a roller or airless sprayer, immediately back brush to ensure thorough penetration and to achieve a uniform finish. For airless spray, use a .009”-.011” tip at 700 – 800 psi, adjusting pressure as needed.Apply a single even coat of Cetol Maintenance RE Wood Finish, avoiding heavy application, and always follow the direction of the wood grain. To prevent lap marks, start at one edge and maintain a wet edge as you work your way across each board. If possible, coat all end grains and the back of all boards.Note: Tannin-containing woods such as redwood, red cedar, mahogany, and douglas fir may cause discoloration in the stain, particularly noticeable with light colors. Clean with a solution of four (4) ounces of oxalic acid to one gallon of warm water using a garden sprayer or a heavy nap roller cover.Shipping RestrictionsSikkens Cetol Maintenance RE is available for ground shipment only. Rough Surface? Measured Square Footage Take each wall and multiply length x height. Example 40' long x 10' high= 400 sq. ft. Add each wall together 400 400 250 250 = 1300 sq. ft. Example 400 sq. ft. x 4= 1600 sq. ft. For each of your gable ends (the triangles) use Base x Height/2 Example 30' x 15' = 450'/2 = 225 sq ft. Add all areas together. Adjust for Type of Log A round log has a different surface area than a flat timber. We must account for the curvature and size of the log so we don't end up short on stain. Select your log type Maintenance Coat Most maintenance coats are done with one coat, often clear. If you plan to add a coat of color and a clear, feel free to ask one of our specialists for some advice. Surface Condition Rough logs will take more stain than smooth logs. If your logs are rough, check off the box and it will calculate based on a rough surface. Note: All calculations are estimated. Actual coverage will vary based on surface condition, species and moisture content.
